By Sally Wileman

Keeping a garden looking good during winter can be both enjoyable and rewarding. Here are five easy tips that will keep your garden looking its best during the cooler months.

  1. Winter Pruning and Tidying Up:

    • Trim back any dead or overgrown branches on trees and shrubs.
    • Cut back perennial plants that have died down for the season.
    • Remove any weeds to prevent them from taking over in the spring.
  2. Protecting Plants from Frost:

    • Cover delicate plants with frost cloths or even old bedsheets on cold nights to shield them from frost damage.
    • Mulch around the base of plants to help insulate roots and maintain soil temperature.
  3. Adding Evergreen Structure:

    • Introduce evergreen plants or shrubs to maintain color and structure in the garden during the winter months.
    • Consider planting ornamental grasses or winter-blooming flowers like pansies and Hellebores to add interest.
  4. Creating Winter Interest with Decor:

    • Install bird feeders or houses to attract wildlife, bringing life and movement to your garden.
    • Place decorative pots filled with winter-hardy plants or seasonal decorations like fairy lights or ornaments.
  5. Planning Ahead for Spring:

    • Start planning what spring flowering and fruiting trees you would like in your garden by choosing bare root varieties.
    • Consider planting some short winter vegie crops such as spinach, kale, silverbeet or spring onions which will be ready by spring.

These tips will keep your garden vibrant and enjoyable throughout the winter season, and will also keep you active and healthy!
